Walking into a dance studio for the first time is exciting, but let’s be honest—it also brings up a lot of questions. The most common one? "What should I wear?"
The good news is that Bachata is a casual, social dance. You don't need a sequined dress or a tuxedo to start learning! Here is our simple guide to help you look good and feel comfortable on the dance floor.
1. Comfort is King (and Queen)
The most important rule is to be comfortable. Bachata involves turns, body rolls, and partner work. You want clothes that move with you, not against you.
- Tops: Wear a t-shirt or tank top that fits well. Avoid anything too baggy that might get caught during turns.
- Bottoms: Leggings, gym shorts, or stretchy jeans are perfect. Avoid stiff pants or short skirts/dresses unless you wear shorts underneath.
- Check: Raise your arms above your head. Does your shirt stay in place? Can you step wide without restriction? If yes, you are good to go!
2. The Shoe Question
You definitely don't need professional dance heels for your first class! In fact, we recommend starting flat to build your balance.
- Indoor Only: Please bring a clean pair of shoes to change into. Street grit spoils the dance floor.
- Socks: Perfectly fine for your first lesson! They help you spin easily.
- Sneakers: Wear comfortable sneakers, but try to avoid running shoes with super "grippy" rubber soles, as they can make turning difficult on your knees. Smooth soles are best.
3. Hygiene & Etiquette
Bachata is a close dance. Being fresh is just as important as being well-dressed!
- Deodorant: Always a must before class.
- Mints: A piece of gum or a mint is appreciated by every partner.
- Extra Shirt: If you tend to sweat, bringing a spare t-shirt to change into halfway through is a pro move.
4. What Not To Wear
To keep everyone safe and comfortable, try to avoid:
- Large Jewelry: Long necklaces or big hoop earrings can get caught.
- Watches/Bracelets: Heavy watches can accidentally scratch your partner.
- Sleeveless Shirts (Leaders): It is generally preferred for leads to wear sleeves, as your partner's hand will often be on your shoulder/back.
